Lego and Sega Confirm Retro Console Collaboration

Lego and Sega announced today a new buildable replica of the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive outside North America), set to launch on June 1. The kit will retail for $39.99 (£34.99 / €39.99) and contains 479 pieces.

“We wanted to give fans a chance to physically build the console that defined a generation,” said a Lego spokesperson in a statement. “With interchangeable stickers for Genesis or Mega Drive branding, this set honors both regional legacies.”

The model measures 4.5 inches long and 6 inches wide. It includes a detachable cartridge, two controllers, and all necessary brick connections to recreate the iconic 16-bit system.

Background: Lego’s Growing Console Collection

This is the first Sega console to join Lego’s “brick-based consoles” lineup, following earlier releases based on the NES, Game Boy, and Atari 2600. Lego previously released Sonic the Hedgehog sets, marking Sega hardware but not a full console kit.

The Genesis set fits a niche for nostalgic Gen-Xers, Millennials, and younger fans drawn to retro gaming culture. Lego’s console series began in 2020 with the NES set, which included a TV displaying Super Mario Bros.

What This Means for Collectors and Gamers

Industry analyst Rachel Bowman of GameCollector Insights said, “This isn’t just a toy—it’s a cultural artifact. The Genesis rivalry with SNES shaped the 1990s, and Lego is tapping into that nostalgia with a highly detailed, customizable build.”

Collectors can choose between North American Genesis or international Mega Drive stickers, a first for Lego’s console line. The model does not play games but offers a full display experience with attachable controllers and cartridge.

Pre-orders begin June 1 via Lego.com and major retailers. Early adopters may receive a limited-edition Sonic the Hedgehog mini-figure, Lego hinted in a press release.
